No, that isn't a title to a new steamy romance I'm writing (although it's a pretty catchy title, don't you think?).
I have two major passions (obsessions?) in my life; my business, and tennis. Two very diverse endeavors, although surprisingly similar in approaches; both require a "go get 'em" attitude.
The problem with having more than one passion is that you usually can't devote energy and time to them equally or at the same time. One will always have to take a back seat to the other.
As with most things in life finding a balance is key. Here are some tips that come in handy when you're trying to find balance in your life:
1. Make a to-do list
It's simple, and may even sound silly, but it's a suprisingly beneficial activity for keeping your life, and your mind, in order. Jotting down the tasks you need to accomplish for the day (keep it realistic!) helps keep you on track. And there is a satisfying sense of accomplishment when you can check off what you've gotten done. Don't worry if you can't get everything done, though. The list isn't supposed to be your taskmaster, just a guideline.
2. Be realistic with your expectations
Speaking of keeping that to-do list realistic . . . when we take a moment to evaluate how important a task is we sometimes find that it's okay to put something off or that it can possibly be done by someone else (if we just ask for help!).
Also be realistic about what to expect from yourself. If you're expecting perfection you're setting yourself up to fail. Besides, imperfections are what make life interesting.
3. Ask for help
And speaking of asking for help . . . we tend to shy away from asking for help because we don't want to inconvenience anyone or don't want to appear incompetent. But sometimes it's better to ask for help than go it alone. Even just asking for advice can provide great opportunities for growth and learning when we have someone else's perspective on a situation.
4. Break bigger tasks down into smaller ones
You know that saying "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step"? If you're facing a task that seems too overwhelming to accomplish all at once, see if there's a way to break it down into smaller increments.
I tend to have an all-or-nothing mentality. If I can't get something done all at once then I feel like I can't do any of it, so it doesn't get done and then I feel overwhelmed. But if I force myself to take a project and break it down to just 10 or 15 minutes at a time, it isn't so overwhelming and the task will eventually get done.
5. Be sure to take breaks
Sure, you're trying to get things done but if you overdo it then you'll get burned out and get nothing done. It doesn't have to be huge blocks of time; even just taking five minutes to breath deeply, roll your shoulders, and let your mind and body rest will go a long way to keeping you energized and staying focused.
